Hour of Micro:bit

A fun introduction to programming a tiny computer, the Micro:bit microcontroller platform.

Course Overview

Hour of Micro:bit is a gentle introduction to physical computing using the BBC Micro:bit, a pocket-sized programmable computer. In this short workshop, students write programs to control the Micro:bit's LED display, buttons, sensors, and radio communication capabilities. The Micro:bit's approachable interface and immediate physical feedback make it perfect for beginners to understand how code controls hardware. This course serves as both a standalone introduction to microcontrollers and as preparation for our more advanced robotics courses. Students leave with a concrete understanding of how programming translates to real-world actions.

Our community programs remove financial and geographic barriers to quality computer science education. Through partnerships with schools, libraries, and community centers across San Diego County, we provide free Tech Club workshops, scholarship opportunities, and outreach initiatives. We work directly with Title I schools, community organizations, and local libraries to bring experienced instructors and hands-on programming curriculum to students who might not otherwise have access to these opportunities. Many students who begin in our free community programs continue on to our paid weekly classes as they advance their skills.
